How to Build Enduring Intrinsic Motivation Practical Methods to Share

Looking back, I did used to have a strong motivation that pushed me to keep pushing forward.

However, due to a variety of factors, some of the goals were ultimately not achieved.

In the last three years, that determined drive has faded, perhaps arguably due to laziness or something else, and while I have reasons to move forward, I just lack that energy and don't know how to adjust.

I am truly hoping to find ways to re-motivate, thank you for your help.

I can feel that you are a bit lost in your heart because your wish didn't come true and you lost your previous drive, which is really a headache. But if you always blame yourself for being lazy, it will make your mood even lower.

From a psychological point of view, the generation of motivation is closely related to our expectations and sense of value. When expectations are not met, it is easy to fall into the mindset of "it's useless to work hard", and motivation is naturally weaker.

I've been in a similar situation myself. For example, I once worked hard to prepare for a certificate, spent a lot of time but failed, and was depressed for a while afterward. Later, I split the big goal into small steps, such as mastering a chapter every day, and checking the box when I finished. Looking at the small goals one by one to complete, confidence slowly came back, even if one day did not meet the target, but every day's progress is also a kind of encouragement. Although I'm a bit introverted and haven't tried to join a study group, you can try to find some friends to work together and supervise each other, so the motivation will be stronger.

You can use a similar approach, for example, if you want to improve your professional skills, break it down to reading a few pages a day and learning a new trick every week. Give yourself small rewards when you're done, like a favorite meal or a movie. At the same time, find some like-minded people to share their progress on a regular basis and cheer each other on. Also, think back to those moments in the past when you were energized, whether it was out of an internal love or external recognition? Find those factors and incorporate them into your present actions, and it may reignite your motivation.
